Lesson Plan:
Science:  Review terms and processes of earthquakes.  Review plate tectonics, fault lines epicenter, seismograph and Richter Scale.  Share video clip of 1989 World Series earthquake in San Francisco. We will take a second look at the structure of the Earth - from core to crust -- relate this back to the movement of the tectonic plates.
Homework:  Students will be given a sheet  answering 5 questions about the interior structure of the Earth.  The back side of the sheet will have the students examining a Richter Scale Chart and determining the types of damages and the level of damages associated with each level of the scale.
Assignments:
Homework:  A double sided sheet.  One side will have the students answering questions about the inside of the Earth -- from crust to core.  The back side of the sheet will have the students examining a Richter Scale Chart and determining the different types of damages and the level of damages associated with each level of the scale.
This assignment will be due on Wednesday, Sept. 20th.

Science:  Students will orally read an brief article on Earthquake - safe buildings.  Students will have to note three building techniques that secures the integrity of a building's structure against an earthquake.
Students will then write the definitions of 5 key vocabulary words from the Smart Board into their science notebooks.
Finally, students will begin to design and construct an earthquake - proof structure using miniature marshmallows and toothpicks.  Students will have today and tomorrow to build and finish their structures.
Assignments:

Wednesday, September 20, 2017
Lesson Plan:
Science:  Collect homework assignments.  After students have handed in assignments, they may continue constructing their earthquake - proof structures.  If students do not have homework completed, they will need to finish sheet prior to continuing construction
